Lesson Format

Each week you will focus on one featured piece of art, and one featured piece of classical music. Lessons in art and music theory will accompany these feature works. In addition, you and your students will be introduced to architectural styles and periods, as well as famous examples of architecture from around the world. Each lesson also includes drama lessons related to the theme. These lessons will teach self confidence and self expression in an enjoyable way for both students and parents.

Scheduling Notes

Apprentice Arts is designed to easily fit into your daily schedule. Ideally, you will schedule Apprentice Arts four days per week. Most activities can be completed in ten minutes or less, including prep time. Many activities, especially drama and music, can provide an active break between periods of quiet study. A suggested schedule has been provided at the beginning of each week. The schedule has been designed to include some of each subject every day. Some days you may only introduce a subject and spend less than five minutes on the suggested activity. At first, this may feel incomplete, but the schedule has been designed with a purpose. Most children learn best when a subject is introduced and reintroduced in a variety of ways over a period of time. As your child explores a style of music or a piece of art in short segments, they will become more familiar and it will hopefully become a part of their general knowledge base.

What's Included

Full Size Art Examples
Each week will focus on a single work of art. This work of art is provided for you in a full size format and laminated for durability. The artist's biography can be found on the back of each work of art. Full size art can be hung on a bulletin board for the week or held by your student as the work is discussed. Make this piece of your kit readily available for your student.

Extra Art Examples
Two to three additional examples of the feature artist's work are provided in your kit. These are helpful in becoming familiar with more famous works of art and in studying the style of the artist. During the week, introduce these cards to your student and allow them to compare the style to main work of art. At the end of the unit, the cards can be used as a game to match artists and their styles.

Music CDs
CDs containing all musical selections are included. Each week will focus on a single composition. CDs also include instrument sounds and other tracks to enhance musical theory, totaling over 90 minutes of music.

Composer Cards
A biography flashcard for each feature composer is included in the kit. These cards include a picture of the composer, a short biography, and fast facts about the composer.

Music Theory Flashcards
Flashcards that reinforce musical terms are included in your kit. Cards are double sided with the answers provided on the back of the card.

Additional Flashcards
New information or vocabulary is provided in a flashcard format for quick and easy review.

Reproducible Worksheets
Worksheets are provided with your kit for a variety of activities. These can be reproduced as needed. For your convenience, two copies have been provided with your kit.
